10 Games That Deserve Sequels: Part 1 of 2
With video games almost 50 years old at their earliest inception at this point, there are quite a few games out there that deserve sequels or new entries but haven’t been given them. Here is the first part of my list of the games that deserve a sequel more than any others.
Beyond Good and Evil
One of Michel Ancels (the creator of Rayman) finest works, Beyond Good and Evil, definitely deserves a sequel at this point. Over the last few years we have seen a trailer, had footage possibly leaked, and have had it said over and over that this game is being made by a small team. The only problem is that we never get any proof of where this game is. Heck, this game could have been canned last year and fans wouldn’t have any idea. This game is one that fans have been clamoring for ever since the original release. Fans want the chance to play as ace photographer Jade and her lovable pals again. This time fans need to speak with their wallets though. The lack of money made from the first game is what holds this game up still today. Hopefully Beyond Good and Evil 2 will sell better if it is released.
Psychonauts
Psychonauts was one of the last two retail titles that hilariously brilliant game designer Tim Schafer put out. This games performance underwhelmed at best, yet Schafer continued on and tried again with Brutal Legend. After Brutal Legends performance was nearly as bad, Mr. Schafer called it quits on retail to focus on smaller downloadable titles. That hasn’t stopped fans from begging with all their life energy for a Psychonauts sequel. The interesting world, crazy (literally) characters, and an ending that would set up a sequel quite well, all have fans wishing upon stars for this sequel. Hopefully sooner rather than later, the time will be right for Tim and his team to draw back the curtains on a possible Psychonauts sequel.
Radiant Historia
Now stay with me here guys. I know this game was released less than a year ago but this game really already deserves a follow up. When Radiant Historia was released early last year I doubt the developers thought that it was going to be a success sales wise. There were far too few copies made and I still don’t know that any more copies were shipped out in America. However, due to the fantastic gameplay, adult storyline, great soundtrack, and fun time travel mechanics, Radiant Historia captured the hearts of gamers and reviewers everywhere. The world explored in Radiant Historia was only a single part of a continent so there could easily be more story and world to explore. Adding an overworld map similar to Final Fantasy or even Chrono Trigger would be nice as well. The additions that could be made to this game would be fantastic and many fans are already itching to play more. Give us some more classic RPG action soon please!
Shenmue II
Wow, it almost feels like a bad joke putting Shenmue II here. This game had one of the highest budgets of any game ever at the time and sold far fewer copies than it needed to. Famed creator Yu Suzuki is no longer with Sega and the Yakuza franchise has sort of filled its spot as its spiritual successor. Is there even a place for this game now? I would say definitely. The story of Ryu and his great journey still haunt gamers with its cliffhanger ending. If Shenmue III were made with modern open world genre advancements this game would really catch on in my opinion. It would be like a Yakuza game where you are on the opposite side of the law. I think that at this point so much buzz has formed around this game over the years that many gamers would buy it just to see what all the fuss is about.
The World Ends with You
The World Ends with You is still one of my favorite DS games released. The games crazy story, likable characters that actually grow over time, and the cool world and art style all made gamers fall in love with The World Ends with You. So where is our damn sequel Square Enix? This game had such original combat and good use of the touchscreen in unison with the top screen. It isn’t often seen in DS games for some reason so it is still a fresh idea that they could improve upon. I know it might be hard continuing the story of Neku and his partners but I’m sure Square Enix could whip some wild story up. If nothing else give us completely new characters. There is nothing wrong with starting over with a new batch of characters having to deal with being dead!
