An Interview With: KilroyFX, Creator of BloodyCheckers
I interviewed KilroyFX, the creator of the very fun BloodyCheckers on Xbox Live Indie Games. Read on to find out how the game was inspired and what’s next for the company.
Trendy Gamers: What were your inspirations for creating BloodyCheckers?
KilroyFX: My inspirations come from games like Kings Field 1, Fable, and Carcasonne….and I have been influenced from a few Harry Potter books. I just wanted a peaceful game that was more mental than say COD4 or LEFT4DEAD2….plus I never ever programmed before or ever made a game so I wanted it to be simple and easy for me to make.
TG: How do you feel about the public acclaim for BloodyCheckers so far, and are you surprised at the number of sales that you have received?
KilroyFX: I have been totally surprised!! I though a few people might discover the game and have some fun…but the high percentage of people who try the game and love it, has been huge!! I was making the game just to learn primarily and to have something to be proud of…
TG: 80 MSP ($1) is a steal for a game with all of the attributes and content of BloodyCheckers, what made you decide that this was the right price point for the game, and did it worry you to sell it for that cheap?
KilroyFX: I am not really into money, and I continued to do 6 free updates for the game, improving the graphics to HD levels and adding all kinds of bonuses and easter eggs. I wanted a lot of people to play online and in multiplayer….and I want everyone to have the chance to try the game….so money is not important to me….I just need enough to make my next game and support my first. I will always be there to answer gamers questions and listen to their ideas and feedback.
TG: You are known to interact a lot with fans through message boards, Xbox Live, as well as play BloodyCheckers with them, what keeps you so involved with fans and how do you feel that their reception is to you being so involved?
KilroyFX: This is what I do, I am a gamer 1st and foremost… I want to play fun and original games that allow me to escape into my own imagination. I need to know how my game is percieved and what are the problems, and the only way is to talk with the players. Most people are happy to talk to the developer of the game they just purchased…..I think they feel respected. Plus, most people don’t realized when you are developing a game you get very little support or feedback…its not until the game is released that you finally hear some praise and kind words.
TG: Some players might jump into BloodyCheckers after hearing praise and perhaps expect too much, what advice do you have for people that haven’t played BloodyCheckers yet?
KilroyFX: Well, try and forget everything you have heard or expect from “Bloodycheckers”….kind of like when you go to see a movie. The game will surprise you in many ways and you get out of it exactly what you put into it time-wise. This is one of the reasons I make the game a dollar….you get high value for your money.
TG: Curveball, what’s your favorite delicious food?
KilroyFX: Kraft Macaroni N cheese with bacon!!
TG: Other than BloodyCheckers, do you have a favorite Xbox Live Indie Game?
KilroyFX: Nope.
TG: What can players expect in the future from you?
KilroyFX: No more board games!! Games that are full COOP, shooting, bloody, violent and action packed fun!!
TG: OK, well that concludes this interview. It was a lot of fun and I hope to do it again sometime. Thanks for making such a fun game!
KilroyFX: Thank you kind sir!!
